Bosque Del Apache
Headed back to US 54 N to Carrizozo, then NW on US 380, crossing a lava field to San Antonio. Just S is Bosque Del Apache Wildlife Refuge.

Bird watchers and photographers converge on Bosque in the late fall and winter as tens of thousands cranes, geese and other birds spend the winter here. We were early.
My bird photographer friends make the pilgrimage here frequently. While I didn't get any shots like the ones they get, here are a few. I used my crop sensor Sony 6600 with a 70-350 lens handheld. We then spent the night in Socorro.
On Oct 20, before we leave Socorro, we find the NM Mineral Museum.

They were super cautious about letting us in even though there was no one else there. Great place if you're interested in rocks and geology.

The spread feathers at the wing tips are really cool. This is a small crop from a 24 MPixel image.
