Besaw Island Farm
The extended family here is considered middle class because they own their farm. They grow alfalfa and other crops to feed livestock and harvest bananas and mangoes. The y have electric power but there are no motorized vehicles on the island. Certainly because there is no local source of fuel. With electricity they have satellite dishes and TV's.
They served us lunch and the head of the household explained life there. There are no health care facilities nearby, but a nurse visits periodically and on the banks of the Nile they can travel to a doctor.
They were interested in what our occupations were. Our tour director translated for us. When I said I was a software engineer, he picked up his hands like they were hovering over a keyboard and moved his fingers up and down.
