Just before sunset - Centro
La Floridita
The neon sign here was only on some of the times we walked by. The right side was dimmer than the left. Had to blend together two exposures. Wonder if this sign existed when Hemingway drank here?
Starving Dog
There are a fair number of street dogs in Havana. They are pretty thin as suggested here, but not starving. Curiously, all the ones I saw were about the same size, about 20 pounds and 15 inches at the shoulder.
Butcher Shop
The bottle of water hanging from the string was (I assume) the "refrigeration." The man kept it motion over the meat on the counter and there was much condensation on the bottle.
Consumer goods store
Hotpoint is a GE brand, I assume this buiding goes back to the pre-Communist era. Fellow travelers said this store was not open in 2013. It now sells some furniture and a few consumer goods (eg toiletry items)
Playground
We couldn't understand why this playground was locked and unavailable to neighborhood children.
Street Sweeper
The broom appears to be made by taping trimmed palm fronds to the handle.
Abandoned Gas Station
The paint looked surprisingly fresh for a closed business
Che ! ! !
A government building by the Plaza de la Revolucion
Jose Marti, Cuba's National Hero
Impressive monument. We were there after the ceremonies for May Day. The area around the bases was roped off (with police presence) so that you couldn't walk around it.
"Revolution is a sense of history"
"Revolution is changing everything that must be changed"
Hospital Calixto Garcia
I found this when I googled the hospital and also read a letter from many surgeons protesting the conditions here. "Although Calixto Garcia is said to be one of the best hospitals in Cuba, it is in a state of deterioration and neglect. Many hospital personnel have complained about the horrendous conditions, which have led to patient complications. This has been a problem with surgery especially. Cuban authorities only ensure the hospital's façade looks nice so that foreigners will think it is the same inside."
Havana's Party City
Sign says, Pinatas: Items for birthday parties
Residential area just across from the University of Havana
Callejon De Jamel
One end of the Callejon
Early morning
Boy on his way to school. Notice hands on the gate on the left.
Shoes on a wall
In the La Guarida building. Well worn. There was a torrential rain a day or two earlier. Must have been hung up to dry.
